If nothing is actively reordering your collection, this is just Shopify working as designed — no sort order considers stock status, so sold-out products keep their position. If you are running a push-down app and something still won't sink, eight causes cover almost every case. They're ordered by likelihood; work through them top to bottom. Written for Sink — Push Down Out of Stock (our app), but causes 3–8 apply to any push-down tool.
1. No push-down automation is installed at all
The most common case isn't a bug — it's the expectation that Shopify does this natively. It doesn't: Best selling, Price, Title, Date, Manual, and Most relevant all ignore inventory. Here's what Shopify can and can't do, and your three options. If you're unautomated, everything below assumes you've installed something.
2. Push-down isn't enabled for that specific collection
Sink is opt-in per collection — installing the app doesn't touch any collection until you enable it. Open Sink, find the collection (the "Push down enabled" tab shows what's managed), and enable it with a sorting rule. Also check your plan's managed-collection count: the free plan manages 5 collections; a collection beyond your limit isn't being sorted.
3. The product is set to "Continue selling when out of stock"
Backorderable products are purchasable on purpose, so Sink can be configured to leave them in place — and that's the recommended default. Check the product's variant inventory settings: if "Continue selling when out of stock" is on and your Sink settings skip such products, it stays put by design. Turn the setting off on the product (or change the Sink filter) if you want it pushed down anyway.
4. An exclusion rule matches the product
Sink can be told not to push down products matching conditions you define — typically tags. A leftover preorder or featured tag rule will quietly hold products at the top even when they're sold out. Review the filter conditions in Sink's settings against the product's tags.
5. The product's inventory isn't tracked
Untracked inventory means there's no "sold out" state — Shopify treats the product as always available, and so does Sink. Open the product's variants and check that "Track quantity" is enabled. The moment tracking is on and quantity is zero, the product qualifies for push-down.
6. It's not "sold out" under your sold-out definition
Multi-location stores hit this one constantly. Sink offers three definitions: unavailable at all locations, unavailable at locations that fulfil online orders, or unavailable at specific locations. If three units sit in a retail-only location and your definition checks all locations, the product is legitimately "in stock" to Sink even though the online store can't sell it. Switch the definition to online-fulfilling (or the specific warehouse that serves your site) and it will sink.
7. The update just hasn't propagated yet
Sink reacts to Shopify's webhooks — changes typically reflect within a couple of minutes, not the same second. Give it a few minutes, hard-refresh the collection page, and remember your theme or CDN may cache pages briefly. To force an immediate refresh, re-save the collection's sorting rule in Sink, which triggers a fresh sort.
8. A shopper (or you) used the theme's sort dropdown
The sort dropdown on a collection page overrides the default order for that visitor. Pick "Price, low to high" and Shopify re-sorts by price — sold-out items mix back in, because the dropdown bypasses the manual order push-down maintains. This isn't a malfunction: push-down governs the default view, which is what the overwhelming majority of shoppers browse. If you're testing, make sure the dropdown shows the default/featured option.
Still stuck? Two edge cases
- Very large collections: Sink sorts up to 11,000 products per collection. In bigger collections, products beyond that boundary aren't repositioned.
- The collection was just created or its rules just changed: smart-collection membership updates and the subsequent re-sort can take a few minutes to settle in sequence.
If none of the eight fits, email support@xeonapp.com with the collection name and an example product — that's everything we need to trace it.
