To push out-of-stock products to the bottom of a Shopify collection, you have three options: switch the collection to Manual sort and drag sold-out items down yourself, use Shopify Flow to tag and exclude them (which hides rather than demotes), or use an app that reorders the collection automatically as inventory changes. Shopify has no built-in "in-stock first" sort order — none of its sort options consider stock status — so anything automatic requires either Flow-based workarounds or an app working through the API.
That's the short answer. The rest of this guide walks through each method properly, so you can pick what fits your store:
- Manually, with the Manual sort order
- The tag-and-exclude workaround (Shopify Flow)
- Automatically, with an app
We build Sink — Push Down Out of Stock, a Shopify app by Xeon Apps, so method 3 is ours — but the trade-offs of each approach are laid out honestly so this stays useful even if you never install anything.
Why push sold-out products down at all?
Because a collection page that opens with "Sold out" badges is a wall of dead ends, and dead ends cost conversions. Shopify keeps sold-out products exactly where your sort order puts them — a best seller that just sold out stays at the top of a best-selling sort, often in the first row shoppers see.
- Buyable products first. Shoppers decide in seconds whether a collection is worth scrolling. Rows of available products keep them moving toward add-to-cart.
- Sold-out items stay discoverable. Unlike hiding, pushing down keeps the product on the page — shoppers who want it can still find it, join a waitlist, or check back.
- Zero SEO risk. Nothing is unpublished. URLs, backlinks, and Google's index are untouched; only the position inside the collection changes.
- Merchandising stays truthful. Your "New arrivals" and "Best sellers" collections keep telling the truth about what's actually available.
Method 1: Can you push products down manually in Shopify?
Yes — switch the collection's sort order to "Manually" and drag sold-out products to the bottom. It's free, it's built in, and for a small store with rare stockouts it genuinely works. It's also completely static: the moment stock changes, the order is wrong again.
How to do it
- In Shopify admin, go to Products → Collections and open the collection.
- Under Products, change the sort order to Manually.
- Drag each sold-out product to the bottom of the list.
- Repeat for every collection — and again after every sellout and every restock.
The trade-offs
- It doesn't stay sorted. Sell out at 9pm and the product sits at the top of the collection until you notice. Restock and it stays buried at the bottom until you remember to drag it back.
- You lose your sort logic. Manual replaces Best selling / Price / Newest entirely — now you maintain the order of every in-stock product too.
- It doesn't scale. Ten collections with daily inventory movement is a part-time job. Shopify also caps manual reordering — very large collections are impractical to arrange by hand.
Method 2: Can Shopify Flow push out-of-stock products down?
Not exactly — Flow can tag products when inventory hits zero, but no Shopify automation can reorder a collection. The common workaround is tag-and-exclude: Flow adds an out-of-stock tag, and your smart collections use a condition to exclude that tag. That removes sold-out products from collections rather than pushing them down — closer to hiding than demoting.
How the workaround goes
- Create a Shopify Flow that adds a tag such as
out-of-stockwhen a product's inventory reaches zero, and removes it when stock returns. - Add a condition to each smart collection: Product tag is not equal to out-of-stock.
The trade-offs
- It hides, it doesn't demote. Sold-out products vanish from the collection page entirely — shoppers can't scroll down to find them, and any collection-page discovery is gone.
- Flow requires eligible plans and a per-variant trigger setup that's easy to get subtly wrong on multi-variant, multi-location products.
- Manual collections are left out. Tag conditions only work on smart collections.
- Sort order still ignores stock. The products that remain are sorted exactly as before; you haven't gained an "in-stock first" order, you've just shrunk the collection.
Method 3: How do you push out-of-stock products down automatically?
With an app that watches your inventory and reorders collections through Shopify's API. This is the only method that's actually "in-stock first": sold-out products sink to the bottom in near real time, in-stock products stay sorted by the rule you choose, and restocked products climb back up on their own.
Here's how it works with Sink:
- Install Sink from the Shopify App Store — the free plan covers 5 collections.
- Enable push-down per collection. Smart and manual collections both work.
- Pick a sorting rule for in-stock products: Best selling, Product title A–Z or Z–A, Highest or Lowest price, Newest, Oldest, Manually, or Most relevant.
- Tune the definitions (optional): decide whether "sold out" means unavailable everywhere, at online-fulfilling locations, or at specific locations — and exclude backorderable ("Continue selling when out of stock") or specially tagged products from push-down.
Under the hood, Sink sets the collection's sort order to Manual in Shopify (saving your original first — it's restored if you ever disable push-down) and then maintains the arrangement continuously: your rule on top, sold-out items at the bottom, updates typically live within a couple of minutes of an inventory change. No theme edits, no code, no scripts on your storefront.
Which method should you use?
| Manual sort | Flow tag-and-exclude | App (Sink) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pushes down (vs. hides) | Yes | No — removes from collection | Yes |
| Automatic on sellout | No | Yes | Yes — within minutes |
| Automatic on restock | No | Yes | Yes — rejoins sort order |
| Keeps your sort rule (best selling, price…) | No — you maintain order | Yes, but only for what remains | Yes |
| Works on manual collections | Yes | No | Yes |
| Cost | Your time | Flow setup + upkeep | Free plan; paid from $2.99/mo |
Rule of thumb: a handful of products and rare sellouts — manual is fine. You specifically want sold-out items gone — use Flow's exclude trick or a hiding app like Blink. You want in-stock products first and sold-out products still findable at the bottom — that's exactly what a push-down app is for.
Quick answers
Does Shopify have a built-in "in-stock first" sort order?
No. The available sort orders — Best selling, Title, Price, Date, Manual, and Most relevant — all ignore stock status. More on what Shopify can and can't do natively.
What happens when a pushed-down product is restocked?
With Sink, it moves back up and rejoins your chosen sort order automatically, typically within a couple of minutes. Details here.
Does pushing products down affect SEO?
No — pages stay published and indexed; only the display position changes. It's the SEO-safest option for sold-out products. Push down vs. hide, including the SEO angle.
Can I keep backorderable or preorder products at the top?
Yes — Sink can skip products set to "Continue selling when out of stock" and products matching tag conditions you define.
Stop reordering collections by hand.
