Why Are Sold Out Variants Still Showing on My Shopify Store?

Nine causes account for almost every "sold-out variant still showing" case: Shopify's default is to grey out rather than hide; the variant is backorderable ("Continue selling when out of stock"); its inventory isn't tracked; your hiding app is in manual mode; the channel isn't selected in the app; your rules exclude the product; it's the intentional all-variants-sold-out safeguard; the update simply hasn't propagated yet; or you're looking at a cached page. Work through them in that order — it's sorted from most to least common.

1. Are you expecting Shopify to hide variants by default?

It doesn't — no theme setting hides sold-out variants; they're greyed out or labelled "Unavailable" and stay on the page. If you haven't installed a hiding app or edited theme code, visible sold-out variants are simply Shopify working as designed. The fixes are covered in our guide to all four hiding methods.

2. Is the variant set to "Continue selling when out of stock"?

Backorderable variants are sellable on purpose, so hiding tools skip them by default. Check the variant in Shopify admin → Inventory: if "Continue selling when out of stock" is ticked, the variant isn't really a dead end — customers can still buy it. VarHide excludes these by default; if you want them hidden anyway, flip that exclusion in the app's settings (or untick the Shopify setting).

3. Is the variant's inventory actually tracked?

If Shopify isn't tracking inventory for a variant, there's no such thing as "sold out" for it — it's treated as always in stock and never hidden. In the variant's inventory settings, make sure "Track quantity" is enabled. This one catches migrated catalogues constantly: imports from other platforms often arrive untracked.

4. Is your hiding app actually set to run automatically?

On VarHide's free plan, updates are manual — nothing happens until you click "run update". If you installed, configured, and waited, but visibility never changes on its own, check the update frequency setting. Real-time automation is a Premium feature; manual mode is working as designed, just on your schedule instead of the inventory's.

5. Is the channel the shopper sees selected in the app?

Channel-level hiding only touches the publications you told it to manage. If the variant is hidden on your Online Store but still shows in, say, a B2B catalogue or another storefront channel, that surface probably isn't selected in the app's channel settings (B2B and Markets coverage are also plan-gated — details here).

6. Do your own rules exclude this product?

If you scoped hiding with rules — by tag, vendor, type, status, price, or metafield — a variant outside the rules is deliberately left alone. Re-check the query builder against the product in question; a filter like "only products tagged clearance" quietly explains a hundred "why not this one?" mysteries.

7. Are ALL the product's variants sold out?

That's the safeguard, not a bug: VarHide never leaves a product with zero published variants, because that 404s the product page. When everything sells out, variants stay visible so the URL stays alive for SEO, bookmarks, and ads. If you'd rather the whole product disappear at that point, that's a product-level job — pair VarHide with Blink, or disable the safeguard in settings if you accept the 404 risk.

8. Has the update simply not propagated yet?

Webhook-driven updates typically land within a couple of minutes — not instantly. A sale a few seconds ago won't have hidden the variant by the time you refresh. Wait two or three minutes before concluding something's wrong.

9. Are you looking at a cached page?

Browsers, Shopify's CDN, and some page-builder or speed apps cache storefront HTML. Hard-refresh, try an incognito window, and check from a second device. If the variant is gone in incognito but present in your normal browser, it was cache all along.

Still stuck? If you're a VarHide user and none of the nine explains it, contact support via the App Store listing with the product handle and the channel where you see the variant — that's everything needed to trace it.

FAQ

Why does Shopify show sold-out variants at all?

By design — themes grey out unavailable variants rather than hiding them, and no built-in setting hides them. True hiding needs theme code or a channel-level app.

Why won't my hiding app hide one specific variant?

Usually: "Continue selling when out of stock" is on, inventory isn't tracked, your rules exclude the product, or the app is in manual mode.

I fixed the setting — why is it still visible?

Allow a couple of minutes for propagation, then check in an incognito window to rule out caching, and confirm the right channel is selected in the app.

Why do fully sold-out products keep all their variants visible?

That's the never-404 safeguard keeping the product page alive. Disable it in settings, or use Blink if you want whole products hidden instead.
