Shopify's admin can't hide a variant on one sales channel but not another — but Shopify's publishing system can, and that's how VarHide works: it manages each variant's membership in each publication (channel) independently, so a variant hidden on your online store stays available at POS, which VarHide never touches by design. Most hiding tools treat visibility as all-or-nothing. Channel-level control is what makes it fit real operations.
Why would you want different visibility per channel?
Because different channels serve different buyers with different rules. Common cases:
- Online store vs. POS. The last unit is on a shelf in your shop. Online, it should vanish (you can't promise shipping); in person, staff should absolutely sell it. VarHide hides it on the Online Store while never touching POS — the POS channel isn't managed at all, by design.
- Multiple storefronts. A main store and an outlet channel don't have to show the same options — hide sold-out variants aggressively on the flagship while the outlet shows everything.
- Wholesale surfaces. B2B buyers ordering in bulk need accurate availability, not marketing polish — manage their catalogues separately (that's its own topic: hiding variants for B2B and Markets).
How does channel-level variant hiding work?
Every sales channel in Shopify is a "publication", and catalog entries are published to publications individually. VarHide operates on exactly that layer: when a variant sells out, it's unpublished from the specific publications you've told the app to manage — and only those. Everything else follows from the architecture:
- Unmanaged channels are never touched. Only the publications you select change — and POS is never managed at all, so in-store selling is always safe. There's no global switch to accidentally flip.
- Each channel hides and restores independently, driven by the same inventory events.
- No per-surface code. The change happens in Shopify's catalog layer — search, filters, and channel membership follow automatically, and the Online Store's variant picker is covered by VarHide's one-toggle app embed rather than code edits.
How do you set it up?
- Install VarHide (free plan available — channel selection included).
- Enable the VarHide app embed for your Online Store (one toggle in the theme editor).
- In the app's settings, tick exactly the sales channels it should manage.
- Pick your sold-out definition and (optionally) rules.
- Enable automatic updates. Sold-out variants now disappear from the managed channels and republish there on restock — everywhere else stays exactly as you set it.
FAQ
Can Shopify hide a variant on one channel but not another?
Not from the admin UI — but the publishing system supports it, and channel-level apps manage it per publication.
Why keep a sold-out variant visible at POS?
In-store staff can sell the last shelf unit or take back walk-in returns — situations where online visibility would just create unfulfillable orders. That's exactly why VarHide never manages the POS channel: POS visibility is always left intact.
Does per-channel hiding need theme changes on each storefront?
No code changes — the Online Store picker is handled by the app embed (a toggle in the theme editor), and search, filters, and channel membership are server-side, so every surface reading from a managed channel reflects it automatically.
